When I was applying to colleges, my father did not see fine art as a “real” major, so I majored in theater. (Somehow that qualified as a real profession.) A few years into the program, I realized that I was still painting and drawing and longing for more instruction in that area, while my desire to act didn’t feel as pressing. So, I brought my sketchbook with me to a wedding in Chicago and stopped by one of the top art schools in the country, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
A few weeks later, I found myself living in a new city, enrolled in the BFA program and happier than I had been in my entire life.
I was following my passion and it felt amazing!
I graduated with my BFA from the Art Institute in 1996 and within 2 years, I found myself in the Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and Art Therapy Program at Notre Dame de Namur University.
Then, in the first week of the 2-year Masters program, I found out… I was pregnant. Whoa, talk about a shock! But, I didn’t let that stop me form attaining my degree. I knew this was in alignment with my purpose.
As it turned out, less than two years into the program and with a wonderful toddler, I found myself pregnant again with my second child. It became evident that I was meant to be a mom, but it would take me 4 years to finish the program and most likely, I wouldn’t be able to fulfill the hours needed to acquire my license for many reasons. So, after completing the MA program in 4 years, I decided not to get my Marriage and Family Therapist license.
That was a BIG decision for me and it made me really confused about my direction...
But, I knew this was the right choice for me to make. Because I had the same calling that you have inside of you.
I knew I was capable of more.
I was ready to do something BIGGER.
It was time to fully express my creative talents and unique gifts.
